FAQ
Common locksmith questions
Straight answers, the same ones you'd get at the counter. Don't see yours? Call (316) 262-6144 and ask, that's what the phone is for.
How much does a locksmith service cost?
It depends on the job. A straight key duplication at the counter costs a few dollars; a safe opening or a master key system is quoted on the work involved. Call us at (316) 262-6144 with what you need and we'll give you a straight answer before any work starts.
Can you make a key without the original?
Yes. In most cases we can originate a new key from the lock itself, by code or by impressioning, for houses, businesses and many vehicles. Bring the lock in or tell us what it's on.
Can you program key fobs and transponder keys?
Yes, for most makes and models, and usually for far less than the dealership. Call with your year, make and model and we'll confirm before you come in.
Can you open a locked safe or vault?
Yes. Lost combinations and locked-up safes are one of the things we've done longest. Wherever possible we open the safe without damaging it, and we can repair or replace the lock afterward.
Do you rekey locks instead of replacing them?
Whenever the hardware is worth keeping, yes. Rekeying keeps your existing locks and simply makes the old keys stop working, which is usually the right move after a move-in or a lost key.
Can you repair a damaged lock?
Usually. We assess the lock first and tell you honestly whether repair or replacement is the better value. We stock quality hardware at the shop either way.
Do you install high-security and smart locks?
Yes. We install and service everything from restricted-keyway high-security cylinders to electronic keypads and smart locks, and we'll tell you plainly which ones are worth your money.
How fast can you get to me?
We run service trucks out of downtown Wichita during business hours, Monday to Friday 8 to 5. Response time depends on where you are and where our techs are; call and we'll give you a real estimate, not a promise we can't keep.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
Ask how long they've been around, where their shop is, and whether they're insured. We've been at it since 1903, you can walk into our storefront at 305 N. Market, and we're fully insured. Be wary of locksmiths with no local address, and of a quoted price on the phone that triples once someone is standing at your door.
Are you a real local locksmith or a call center?
We're a storefront at 305 N. Market in downtown Wichita, family-owned since 1903, and our trucks leave from that address. When you call, someone at the shop answers. Many results in a 'locksmith near me' search are national dispatch services that subcontract your job out.
Do you charge a trip fee?
For road service, yes, a service call covers getting a truck and a technician to you. We'll tell you what it is on the phone, before we come out. Counter work at the shop has no trip charge, which is why we'll often suggest bringing the lock in.
What forms of ID do you need before opening a lock?
Proof that the property is yours: a driver's license matching the address, a lease, a registration and title for a vehicle, or paperwork for a safe. Every reputable locksmith asks. It's what keeps us from being the tool somebody uses against you.
Do you offer 24-hour emergency service?
Our regular hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and that's when our trucks run. Call the shop and we'll tell you honestly what we can do and when.
Can you get here today?
Often, yes, depending on where you are and what our trucks are already committed to. Call and we'll give you a realistic window rather than a promise we can't keep.
What payment do you take?
Cash, checks, and major credit cards at the counter and in the field. Established commercial accounts can be invoiced.
Do you sell locks and hardware, or only install them?
Both. There's a retail floor at the shop with locks, safes, and hardware, and you're welcome to buy the parts and do the work yourself. We'll tell you what you need either way.
